Intuition: The quartets coupled here sprang from the pens of three 17-year-old composers. They testify to the astonishing intuition of the young Mozart, Schubert and Arriaga, filled with wonder in their teenage years by the range of expressive possibilities offered by the string quartet. Free from all constraint, and notably untrammelled by illustrious models whose mantle they had still to inherit, yet nevertheless displaying complete mastery of form, they were stimulated by the audacity and enthusiasm of youth to write visionary works brimming with dazzling premonitions, each one of which reveals the singularity of their genius.
